Three minutes later Kent stood in the living room, Roland’s cell to his ear. Two rings passed before a male voice sounded. “Good evening, J. J. Fox cigars.”

“Charlie, please.”

“May I ask who’s calling?”

“Jeremy.”

The man on the other end hesitated slightly. Then, “one moment.”

Soon the line picked up. “Jeremy?”

“Charlie.”

“Always good to hear the voice of my favorite customer.”

“You should’ve been a politician.”

“I’m in sales; what’s the difference?” He took a breath. “Calling for an order, I suppose. What’ll it be this time—Churchills? Torpedoes?”

“Give me a box of Gran Coronas.”

“Always an excellent choice. It will be done.”

“I’ll leave the brand to your good taste. You do have my card on file?”

“Of course.” A pause. “Anything else?”

“Just take care of yourself.”

The phase carried an air of finality. Charlie seemed to understand. “Same to you.”
